Remembering Mr Amoss: Unlocking Family History from Old Postcards

a talk by

Lesley Wood

Most people that collect old postcards are interested in the images on the front; the interesting locations, the local and social history. Few people take any notice of the messages on the back or are interested in the people who wrote or received the postcards. This talk will explain how you can combine the facts from traditional records with the narratives found in postcards to create a richer family history. Throughout my research my motivation was in remembering Mr Amoss – a complete stranger, not a name in my Family Tree. I hoped I would find a living relative to pass my research on to but if not it would simply be enough to share his story with other people interested in our fascinating hobby.

Heart of Chelmsford 1860-1960

a talk by

Alan Pamphilon & Yvonne Lawrence

This talk will take us on a trip back into the past to a time when the High Street was a main road. At that time the street was a mixture of both shops and houses with some of the owners living above their businesses. Then a shop was part of a house rather than an apartment over a store. The most common ways to travel around the town then were by horse or bicycle.

The constant themes throughout this talk are; Water & Flooding, Roads & Traffic, Alcohol and Abstinence, Housing retail and hospitality.
